Victims of Crime Compensation Applications

< Back

People injured as a result of a violent crime may be entitled to financial assistance through state administered schemes. Assistance is generally available for counselling, medical treatment, loss of earnings, safety related expenses and, in some circumstances, a recognition payment, and eligibility does not depend on the offender being convicted or even identified.

Family members can also be eligible. Where a person has died as a result of a violent crime, close relatives and dependants may be able to claim for funeral expenses, counselling and loss of financial support. These entitlements are frequently overlooked at a time when families are dealing with far more pressing matters.

Applications require supporting material, including reports to police, medical and counselling records, and evidence of the losses claimed. We prepare that material, present the application clearly, and deal with the scheme directly so that clients are not required to recount events repeatedly.

Where the offender or another party has the means to meet a judgment, a separate civil claim may also be available. We advise on whether that option is realistic before it is pursued.
